CCB attended and exhibited at the 2019 National Agriculture Show over 19 – 25 August, held in Gaborone at Sebele Showgrounds. The Ministry of Agricultural Development and Food Security organized and hosted the show to celebrate and showcase agricultural projects and initiatives of Botswana citizens and exhibitors from neighbouring countries like South Africa. The show was held under the theme “Enabling Food Security Through Profitable Communal Farming Practices”. In his official opening remarks, the Vice President of Botswana, Hon. Slumber Tsogwane, elaborated that the government is committed to supporting farmers develop and sustain communal farming areas to contribute towards food security and the economy of Botswana. He mentioned that there are several interventions that the government has undertaken in an effort to cushion farmers such that they may continue to generate income and increase production.
The CCB team interacted with the public, enlightening them on issues of cheetah conservation and sustainable livestock farming practices - such as the use of livestock guarding dogs, building of carnivore-proof kraals and veterinary care for both dogs and livestock. The ever entertaining issue of the differences between cheetahs and leopards was presented to those who visited our stall. While everyone came up with their own characteristics of the two - usually confusing them - once our team offers explanations, the awareness and closure of the knowledge gap paints a smile on everyone’s face. It is because of these interactions that CCB is committed to imparting knowledge about cheetahs as well enlightening farming communities on how they can use their land sustainably to coexist with wildlife, generate income, improve their quality of life and increase production.
