Communities for Conservation Coordinator
Ghanzi, Botswana
Cheetah Conservation Botswana has an employment opportunity for the position of Communities for Conservation Coordinator, based in Ghanzi and working in the Ghanzi Wildlife Management Areas. The Communities for Conservation programme supports target communities to participate more fully within the wildlife economy and support implementation of the broader CBNRM programme. Activities will include inter alia, enhancing functionality of community trusts, providing capacity building opportunities to trusts and community members, investigating livelihood development opportunities, designing & overseeing pilot community centred, conservation projects and related activities in our target communities.

Salary will be dependent on skills and experience, with 10% monthly pension contributions, 50% medical aid contributions, accommodation at CCB field camp in Ghanzi if required, or rental can be arranged in Ghanzi town at own cost.

Requirements:
- Minimum MSc, in environmental or social sciences or related topic.
- Minimum 5 years field experience, ideally in community-based conservation and development.
- Skills and experience in CBNRM, participatory planning processes, livelihood assessments, capacity building & training, ecotourism and project management preferred.
- Clean driver’s license with bush driving experience essential.
Responsibilities:
- Monitor and supervise the implementation of CCB’s Communities for Conservation programme
- Ensure the design and implementation of the programme is informed by community based participatory planning processes
- Identify capacity building needs of the target CBOs and explore ways and means of how these can best be addressed
- Investigate the feasibility and viability of conservation friendly, income generating activities that community members can undertake
- Support needs assessment, community mobilisation, training and uptake of skills related to the above
- Facilitate introductions and relationships between target communities and relevant stakeholders for their sustainable development
- Liaise with other programmes and organisations active in the area to ensure synergy, avoid duplication and explore possibilities for collaboration if deemed necessary
- Liaise closely with other programme and department coordinators to ensure synergy in organisational activities
- Oversee development of pilot projects and evaluate progress
- Support communities in institution building and processes that promote local democracy as well as social justice
- Manage and monitor locally based staff and volunteers
- Prepare and submit progress reports on operational activities and programmes periodically.

The Communities for Conservation programme supports target communities to participate more fully within the wildlife economy and support implementation of the broader CBNRM programme. The intern’s role will be assisting with the following approaches: providing capacity building opportunities to trusts and community members, investigating livelihood development opportunities, designing & supporting pilot community centred, livelihoods projects and related activities in our target communities.

The intern will be required to assist the Communities for Conservation staff with a broad range of tasks related to the programme, including, inter alia:
A monthly stipend will be provided. There will be opportunities for full-time employment after 6-12 months dependant on performance and commitment.

Requirements:
- Minimum BSc, in environmental or social sciences or related topic.
- Interest and knowledge of the following: local languages in the Ghanzi district, CBNRM, participatory planning processes, livelihood assessments, community capacity building & training, ecotourism, veld products and craft production.
- Clean driver’s license essential.
Responsibilities:
The intern will be required to assist the Communities for Conservation staff with a broad range of tasks related to the programme, including, inter alia:
- Follow up on programmatic actions
- Community based participatory planning processes
- The organisation of various community meetings, training workshops and feedback sessions
- Feasibility assessments of conservation friendly, income generating activities
- Community mobilisation, training and uptake of skills
- Monitoring of pilot projects
- Data collection and entry
- Preparation of progress reports on operational activities and programmes
