CCB has long been promoting the use of livestock guarding dogs (LGDs) in Botswana as an effective method of non-lethal carnivore control. LGDs have proved to be successful carnivore deterrents especially to small and medium-sized carnivores like cheetahs and jackals. On that note, CCB hosted and awarded the best LGD farmers in the Ghanzi region with 42 farmers participating in this competition. The main objective of the competition was to motivate those livestock farmers enrolled in CCB’s LGD programme to maintain and advance their good farming practices and techniques. The 10 best performing dogs were selected and their owners rewarded with prizes on the 14th of November 2018 at CCB’s Ghanzi Education camp. The event was graced by representatives from the District Commissioner’s office, the Department of Wildlife and National Parks from Ghanzi, the Botswana Police Service (Department of Stock Theft), Departments of Veterinary Services, Animal Production and Agricultural Business, Ghanzi Town Council and the Ghanzi Farmers Association. Special thanks goes to Kenzo Enterprise for their donation of 20 8kg bags of dog food and 20 dental sticks as part of the hamper that went along with the winner’s prizes. The 1st prize winner, Mr. Ofaletse R. Thaushe, received 5 bags of adult dog food, 2nd prize winner, Mr. Geoffrey Moyo received 4 bags, 3rd prize winner, Mr. Odumetse Malataloso received 3 bags, while the 7 runners ups received 1 bag each. The day was a resounding success and all of the winners were very grateful for their prizes. We wish to also extend our sincere thanks to Botswana Television for their support and all the farmers who took part in this year’s competition, whose growing interest and participation is a strong indicator that non-lethal solutions to carnivore conflict do receive serious consideration amongst those affected.
